The World Health Organization (WHO) has praised Ethiopia's considerable efforts to improve the quality and expand the accessibility of its health services, suggesting the country's initiatives could serve as a valuable model for other nations.
Professor Francis Chisaka Kasolo, WHO Representative to Ethiopia, the African Union (AU), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), commended Ethiopia's commitment to ensuring its citizens receive quality healthcare. Professor Kasolo highlighted the country's significant progress in the health sector in recent years.
He specifically noted Ethiopia's successful work in ensuring quality health care, increasing the accessibility of essential medicines and medical equipment, and boosting domestic pharmaceutical production. Professor Kasolo stated, "It is really an exciting time. We see the progress they are making in health development... other countries should come and learn on how they develop their health systems, how they manufacture safe medicines and products." He added that Ethiopia is on track to become a center for health development in Africa.
The WHO affirmed its commitment to strengthening support in collaboration with the Ethiopian government to ensure the provision of safe and reliable health services. This partnership is being intensified, particularly in areas like controlling outbreaks and diseases that require immediate action.
According to ENA, Professor Kasolo also cited the successful joint efforts to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic as a key example of the collaboration. Furthermore, he indicated that the WHO is actively exploring ways to support Ethiopia's ambition to become a leading pharmaceutical and medical products manufacturing hub in Africa.
