GERD's 'Nigat Lake' Spurs Major Fisheries Boom, Job Creation in Benishangul-Gumuz

Nov 06, 2025

The artificial Nigat Lake, created by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), has become a powerful catalyst, driving a major revitalization of the fisheries sector in the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State.

Dr. Birhanu Itecha, Deputy Head of the Livestock and Fisheries Development Sector at the Regional Agriculture Bureau, stated that the reservoir's formation has led to a substantial increase in the region's fish productivity.

Beyond boosting production, the lake is credited with generating extensive employment opportunities. Dr. Birhanu confirmed that 78 associations have been formally organized to undertake fish farming operations on the lake.

These associations collectively comprise 889 members (735 men and 154 women). Notably, 35 associations, with 557 members, have already commenced work after receiving the necessary operational resources.

The cooperatives have begun supplying their catch to the market, yielding 1,435 tonnes of fish in the first quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. Due to favorable conditions in the coming period, officials anticipate an even stronger output in the second and third quarters.

The regional government is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and the private sector to sustainably enhance fish productivity and strengthen crucial market linkages.

To address the associations' equipment needs, 48 wooden boats, six motorboats, 1,600 spools of net-making thread, and 1,000 fishing nets have been supplied.

Dr. Birhanu stressed that acquiring refrigerated vehicles equipped with freezers is essential to ensure the harvested fish reaches consumers efficiently. According to FBC, efforts are reportedly underway with relevant stakeholders to procure this vital infrastructure.
