Ethiopia has been selected to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference, formally known as the Conference of the Parties (COP 32), which is scheduled to take place in 2027.
The endorsement came during the ongoing COP 30 summit in Belém, Brazil. Ethiopia had officially submitted its request to host the conference and secured unanimous support from African nations.
Richard Muyungi, Chairman of the African Group of Climate Change Negotiators, confirmed to AFP that the group had accepted and approved Ethiopia’s proposal to host COP 32. Brazil, the President of COP 30, also verified the selection by the African regional group.
while the African Negotiators' decision is considered an informal but crucial step, it is expected to be formally ratified by all participating nations before the conclusion of COP 30. This final confirmation is anticipated to be officially announced on November 21, 2025.
The selection of a host country for the UN Climate Change Conference rotates among the five regional groups within the United Nations system. Brazil is currently hosting COP 30 on behalf of the Latin American and Caribbean countries, with the summit running until November 21, 2025.
