Ethiopia's Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, has declared that the African continent has "spoken with one voice" and the world has listened, following the unanimous endorsement of Ethiopia to host the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference (COP32) in Addis Ababa in 2027.
The announcement was made by the Prime Minister shortly after the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) confirmed the decision on the sidelines of the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil. Ethiopia’s capital successfully saw off a rival bid from Nigeria.
In a statement, PM Abiy Ahmed extended "heartfelt gratitude to the African Group of Negotiators for their unanimous endorsement," framing the selection as a significant recognition of the continent's growing role in global climate diplomacy.
PM Abiy Ahmed: "We are honored to be entrusted by the global community with such an important responsibility. This recognition reflects confidence in Ethiopia’s leadership in climate action and its capacity to host major global events."
The Prime Minister emphasized that Ethiopia views the opportunity not just as a host, but as a leader ready to tackle humanity’s daunting climate challenges.
Building on the momentum of the Second Africa Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister affirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to delivering a summit focused on African-led solutions.
"Ethiopia remains fully committed to delivering a robust and meaningful outcome and inclusive COP32 that advances collective action against climate change," the statement read.
PM Abiy concluded by pledging to elevate Africa’s climate narrative: "Building on the momentum of the Second Africa Climate Summit, Ethiopia will continue to champion Africa as a continent of solutions and a committed partner in the global effort for a sustainable future."
