PM Abiy Ahmed Addresses G20 Summit on Climate Action, Renewable Energy, 'Medemer'

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) delivered a speech at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. His address focused on Ethiopia's commitment to tackling global climate change and advancing national development through renewable energy and the philosophy of 'Medemer' (synergy).

Climate Change Mitigation and Green Initiatives

Prime Minister Abiy highlighted that climate change is a global threat. Recognizing this concern, Ethiopia has responded by planting over 48 billion seedlings in recent years.

He stressed that as a country, "we are working with focus on utilizing non-polluting energy alternatives, based on the plan in the power development sector." He cited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as an example, stating that it "embodies the future hope of Africa's renewable energy."

Renewable Energy Transition

Beyond water, the Prime Minister noted, "by working on solar, wind, and nuclear power options, we are accelerating our transition to renewable energy." Ethiopia is also expanding its development in geothermal power.

He affirmed that Ethiopia is laying down pollution-free renewable energy transmission lines that can stimulate African industry.

The 'Medemer' Philosophy and National Development

The Prime Minister spoke about Ethiopia's identity as an ancient land of civilization, noting that it is currently undertaking reform activities by following the 'Medemer' philosophy.

He explained that by implementing this philosophy, Ethiopia is working to ensure that all citizens stand in unity and cooperation, contributing their share to the country's development.He stated that through 'Medemer', Ethiopia is sharing its many experiences and is on the path of growth.

He highlighted that Ethiopia's industrial parks are contributing significantly to economic growth and mentioned their benefit to farmers.

He also noted the government is working to facilitate a path for young entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams.

He acknowledged that Ethiopia was known for its history of poverty and backwardness for a long time, but now everyone is contributing their share to become self-reliant and escape from poverty and backwardness.

Digitalization, Infrastructure, and Investment

PM Abiy elaborated that Ethiopia is undertaking successful works by expanding education and infrastructure and by creating a conducive environment for foreign investment.

On the digital front:

In the development of Digital Ethiopia, a favorable environment has been created for Ethio Telecom to be freed from government control and participate in the modern financial sector.

He noted that to strengthen national digital infrastructure development by 2030, work is being done to modernize public services by updating integrated national ID services, payment systems, and data systems.

He stated that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will serve as a crucial technology for providing inclusive services. AI is being used in Ethiopia to predict drought, identify diseases, and translate local languages to provide all-inclusive services.

Sharing Ethiopia's Success Story

The Prime Minister concluded by stating that Ethiopia has many exemplary success stories and experiences to share with developing countries. He suggested that much experience and lessons can be taken from Ethiopia on how to achieve inclusive and sustainable growth even in difficult circumstances.
