Nov 26, 2025 3

The Government of Ethiopia is escalating its public health efforts in response to the Marburg virus outbreak, with Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba announcing that a significant number of contacts are currently identified and under close medical surveillance.

The Minister confirmed that 349 people who had contact with Marburg virus patients have been traced and are being monitored. This comprehensive contact tracing is a core part of the national strategy.

Dr. Mekdes provided a clear update on the situation: Out of the 73 people tested so far, 11 individuals have been confirmed positive for the Marburg virus. Sadly, six of these individuals have passed away, while the remaining five confirmed patients are actively receiving medical treatment and monitoring. Encouragingly, 119 of the traced contacts have completed their surveillance period, tested negative, and have been released from the isolation center.

She emphasized that a National Task Force has been established and is working diligently to implement prevention and control measures across the country.

Dr. Mesay Hailu, Director-General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), stated that EPHI is working in close coordination with all relevant stakeholders to curb the virus's spread. Efforts are focused on strengthening control and screening measures at checkpoints, expanding active surveillance and field investigation activities, and prioritizing public awareness and community education.

Dr. Mesay called upon the community to cooperate by strictly following the safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and providing timely reports of any suspicious cases.
