Kumara Wakjira, the Director General of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), has been honoured with the prestigious Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa—the highest accolade given at the annual Tusk Conservation Awards.
The award recognises Kumara's lifetime achievement and over three decades of dedicated service to protecting Ethiopia's diverse wildlife and biodiversity. The announcement was made by the Ethiopian Embassy in London, which hailed the honour as a testament to the country's commitment to conservation.
In his acceptance remarks, Kumara underscored the national importance of initiatives like Ethiopia's Green Legacy Initiative, a massive reforestation and environmental protection effort. He also used the platform to call for stronger international collaboration and partnership to sustain conservation efforts across the continent.
The Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa is given to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to wildlife preservation in the region. Kumara's recognition is seen as a major boost for conservation efforts in Ethiopia and an inspiration across Africa.
