Cameroon’s state-owned telecommunications provider, CAMTEL, has forged a strategic alliance with Ethio telecom, aiming to mirror Ethiopia’s rapid digital transformation.
The partnership was endorsed by Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, during a high-level meeting with Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru and CAMTEL Director General Judith Yah Sunday.
Ngute described digitalization as the "cornerstone" of sustainable economic growth and pledged his government’s full support for the deal. He emphasized that African nations must collaborate to build robust digital infrastructure, expressing a desire to see Ethiopia's success in connectivity replicated in Cameroon.
Under the agreement, Ethio telecom will share technical know-how, best practices, and operational experience to help CAMTEL modernize its network.
Frehiwot Tamru outlined the "decisive role" her company has played in Ethiopia’s recent development, specifically in expanding nationwide connectivity and driving financial inclusion through digital services.
"Expanding digital infrastructure does not only improve services; it creates opportunity, empowers citizens, and strengthens economies," Frehiwot said.
She described the collaboration as a "strategic responsibility," framing it as a model for how African operators can unite to accelerate the continent's digital economy and reduce reliance on external providers.
Judith Yah Sunday, General Manager of CAMTEL, said the partnership aims to accelerate service excellence in Cameroon. She cited the success of the "Digital Ethiopia" strategy as a primary motivation for the alliance.
"We are confident that this partnership will accelerate modernization, building on Ethio telecom’s proven track record," she said.
The visiting delegation also held strategic talks with Minette Libom Li Likeng, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, and Grégoire Owona, Minister of Labour and Social Security.
