Ethiopia is making significant strides in building a green economy by aggressively utilizing its abundant renewable energy sources. A key part of this strategy involves the importation of electric vehicles (EVs), which reduces both environmental pollution and dependence on foreign currency for fuel imports.
The increase in the number of EVs across the country has been met by a corresponding expansion of the necessary charging infrastructure. State-owned telecom provider Ethio Telecom has opened three initial charging stations in Addis Ababa and is being joined by private investors who are rapidly entering the sector to establish more facilities.

Drivers of electric vehicles interviewed by ETV expressed satisfaction with the growing availability of the service. They noted that the proliferation of charging stations has made it easier to secure a reliable power supply and has ensured they receive faster service.
However, as the number of electric vehicles in the capital continues to grow, drivers emphasized the need for the expansion of charging stations to keep pace with the rising demand. The consensus is that the infrastructure must grow proportionally to sustain the city's shift toward electric mobility.
