Digital Ethiopia 2030 will Dismantle State Bureaucracy Declares PM Abiy Ahmed

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has highlighted the need to strip away layers of administrative red tape, describing the move as a central part of his "Medemer" vision for modernizing the country. Speaking at the launch of the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy over the weekend, the prime minister framed the expansion of digital services as a moral and administrative necessity.

Dr. Abiy argued that the "Medemer" philosophy fundamentally believes in the reduction of "small-minded" administrative barriers in favor of grand, strategic goals. He observed that many citizens are currently forced to navigate an "extended and financially burdensome" path to access basic services—a system he believes is intentionally maintained by those who profit from manual, chaotic processes.

Reflecting on the preceding Digital Ethiopia 2025 roadmap, the Prime Minister declared it a "near 100% success." Despite initial skepticism regarding Ethiopia's technical capacity, he noted that the digital integration within agriculture, mining, and tourism has matched the successes seen in other major economic sectors. He invited the academic community to audit these results, describing the journey from 2025 to 2030 as an "instructive lesson" in converting long-term vision into practical execution.
