Government Claims 257 Million Birr in Food Aid Delivered to Hitsatse Camp

The Ethiopian government has dismissed reports of a humanitarian crisis at a displacement camp in the Tigray region, insisting that food supplies are being delivered consistently.

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) issued a statement addressing concerns over the Hitsatse temporary shelter, located in the Asgede district of Tigray's North Western Zone.

The commission characterized recent social media reports alleging a lack of aid as "inaccurate"and claimed they failed to reflect the reality on the ground.

According to the EDRMC, the federal government has made citizens in temporary shelters a "top priority"for food distribution. Officials stated that aid has been provided without interruption throughout the year.

"Our data shows that citizens at the Hitsatse temporary shelter have received complete and uninterrupted humanitarian food assistance from September through to December,"the commission said.

To support its claim, the EDRMC released a detailed breakdown of the number of beneficiaries reached over the last four months:

September:16,775 beneficiaries (including those from neighboring shelters)

October:18,290 beneficiaries

November:17,813 beneficiaries

December:14,413 beneficiaries

The commission said it had delivered more than 11,400 quintals of essential supplies—including wheat, sorghum, pulses, and cooking oil—with an estimated value of over 257 million Ethiopian Birr.

While the federal government manages the supply chain, the commission pointed the finger at local authorities regarding the final stages of delivery.

It noted that while it remains "ready to provide necessary support"if requested by the Tigray Interim Administration, the responsibility for ensuring aid reaches its intended target lies with regional and local officials.

"We wish to remind the regional and local interim administration that it is their responsibility to ensure aid is used only for its intended purpose and to fill any existing gaps," the statement concluded.
