In a significant boost to Ethiopia-China relations, a sweeping medical mission, the "2025 Chinese Medical Volunteers Africa Charity Mission," has been launched at the Silk Road General Hospital in Addis Ababa today, promising vital healthcare services to millions.
Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie, Ethiopian Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba, and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Chen Hai underscored the mission's importance in solidifying bilateral ties and extending crucial medical assistance.
The ambitious program will offer diverse surgical procedures, including pediatric heart surgery and cataract removal, alongside specialised consultations in ophthalmology and gynaecology. Beyond hospital-based interventions, the initiative includes comprehensive eye and heart examinations in select public and private schools, and cervical cancer screenings for women aged 18 and above.
Organisers anticipate reaching five million individuals in need, building upon last year's success where over four million received healthcare services through similar volunteer efforts.
"The bilateral relations between Ethiopia and China are not only more effective in trade but also in the international arena," declared President Taye, expressing his gratitude to the Chinese volunteers for their unwavering dedication.
He urged the medical professionals to prioritise knowledge and skill transfer during their mission, ensuring long-term benefits for Ethiopian healthcare professionals.
The President emphasised the mission's potential to provide critical medical attention to children and others lacking sufficient access to healthcare.
For her part, Ethiopia’s Health Minister Dr. Mekdes Daba echoed the sentiment, highlighting the program as a testament to the enduring partnership, solidarity, and developmental collaboration between Ethiopia and China.
"Health services have no borders," she stated, emphasising the profound message of compassion embedded within the volunteer initiative.
Chinese Ambassador Chen Hai reinforced the strong bond between China and Africa, stating, "China and Africa are close friends, partners, and brothers."
He added that healthcare cooperation between the two regions is rapidly evolving, marking a new era of collaborative progress and tangible outcomes.
The ambassador noted the deepening health partnership's expanding reach and its significant impact on countless lives.
