Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded a three-day official visit to Ethiopia today, following high-level talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos. The visit focused on solidifying the China-Ethiopia All-Weather Strategic Partnership and implementing the recent outcomes of the FOCAC Beijing Summit.
The two nations committed to a comprehensive expansion of bilateral ties, blending traditional cooperation in infrastructure and trade with a new focus on the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and green energy. This modernization drive is supported by a mutual pledge to enhance state governance exchanges and development strategy coordination.
Diplomatically, Ethiopia reaffirmed its strict adherence to the One-China principle and its support for China's national reunification. In return, China expressed firm support for Ethiopia's sovereignty and its independent development path. Regarding regional stability, both sides emphasized the importance of China's Outlook on Peace and Development in the Horn of Africa, highlighting the role of diplomatic dialogue in securing maritime logistics and regional integration.
As members of BRICS and the UN, both countries vowed to amplify the voice of the Global South and uphold international law. The ministers also designated 2026 as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges to deepen cultural and educational ties. A new round of political consultations is scheduled for later this year to ensure the continued momentum of these initiatives.
