Ethiopian Airlines Marks 80 Years with Plans for Massive New Aviation Hub

Jan 09, 2026 199

Ethiopia's national carrier is celebrating eight decades of aviation leadership with a bold signal that its rapid global expansion is only just beginning. In a recent update shared by PMOEthiopia, the Prime Minister's Office described the airline as "80 years young,"noting that despite its long history, the carriers momentum continues to accelerate.

The airlines' primary base, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, has effectively become a "city that moves,"currently handling nearly 25 million passengers annually. However, PMOEthiopia highlighted that with a fleet of over 160 modern aircraft and an additional 60 currently on order, a single hub is no longer sufficient to meet the airline's soaring demand. To address this, PMOEthiopia confirmed the government's serious commitment to building a second major hub to support a network that already reaches 145-plus destinations.

By investing in this new infrastructure, the government aims to turn these "bigger dreams"into reality, ensuring the airline remains the primary gateway for the African continent. This milestone year, as framed by PMOEthiopia, blends a storied past with a future-focused strategy that positions Ethiopia as an undisputed global aviation powerhouse.
