Japan Provides New Assistance Package to Ethiopia

Jan 12, 2026 92

The Government of Japan has announced a new assistance package for Ethiopia, valued at approximately USD 10.5 million (around 1.62 billion Ethiopian Birr), in partnership with various UN agencies and an international organization.

Japan has consistently worked to support efforts to improve the humanitarian situation and peacebuilding in Ethiopia through financial and technical assistance. Japan remains committed to strengthening its partnership with Ethiopia under the ongoing initiatives.

This new assistance package consists of two main packages: the Classic Package and the TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) Package. These initiatives aim to support a range of projects across sectors such as humanitarian aid, agriculture, health, water and sanitation (WASH), and education, all geared toward strengthening resilience and development.

The Classis Package, valued at USD 5.14 million, focuses on humanitarian response, the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus, and climate change resilience. It aligns with the needs discussed at the High-Level Development Forum and is consistent with sector-specific policy papers and Ethiopia's Resilient Recovery and Reconstruction Framework (3RF). The projects within this package will be implemented in collaboration with UNICEF, UNFPA, ILO, CBPF, ICRC, and IFPRI.

The TICAD Package provides USD 5.4 million to support co-creative projects that involve partnerships between UN agencies and Japanese private companies, aiming to boost Ethiopia's development and resilience. These projects leverage Japanese technologies to address economic and social challenges in Ethiopia and foster a conducive working environment for Japanese companies, UN agencies, and the governments of both Japan and Ethiopia. This assistance will be executed in collaboration with UNFPA, WHO, FAO, UNIDO, UNDP, UNESCO-IICBA, and UNHCR.
