Ethiopia Eyes Double Digit Growth as Record Harvests Fuel Economic Boom

Feb 03, 2026 603

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia's economy is projected to grow by 10.2% this fiscal year, a figure that places the nation among the world's fastest-growing non-oil-producing economies. Addressing the 10th Regular Session of the 5th Year of the 6th Term of the House of PeoplesRepresentatives, the Prime Minister noted that this revised forecast, based on performance over the last six months, aligns closely with recent projections from the International Monetary Fund.

This optimistic outlook is underpinned by a significant surge in agricultural productivity, with 999 million quintals of crops harvested in the first half of the year alone. This output represents 78% of the government's annual plan, while specific sectors including horticulture and cotton have already achieved 79% of their targets. The Prime Minister told lawmakers that if this momentum is sustained through the second half of the year, the country is well-positioned to surpass its initial production goals.

Beyond the immediate economic figures, the Prime Minister highlighted a governance model increasingly guided by technology and knowledge-based initiatives. He pointed to the Green Legacy reforestation programme, urban development, and investments in children's education as essential pillars for the country's long-term stability.

These efforts are designed not only to resolve historical economic burdens but also to create sufficient domestic wealth to ensure that the next generation can find prosperity within Ethiopia rather than being forced into migration.
