The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has formally distinguished Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, as one of Africa’s four most influential aviators during the IATA Focus Africa Conference in Addis Ababa. The recognition was announced by Kamil Alawadhi, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, during a session centered on the continent's strategic aviation growth.

Mesfin was honored alongside Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Teresia Mbaika Malokwe, Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Aviation, and Poppy Khosa, the CEO of the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

IATA’s selection highlights a period of significant transformation and leadership excellence across the African aviation landscape. Mesfin Tasew’s inclusion on the list follows his successful management of the Ethiopian Airlines Vision 2035 strategic plan, which seeks to grow the carrier’s fleet to 271 aircraft and reach a milestone of 65 million annual passengers by the end of the decade. This growth strategy has been pivotal in strengthening Addis Ababa’s role as a leading continental hub and maintaining the airline's competitive edge on the global stage.

The conference, themed around elevating safety, connectivity, and operational efficiency, also drew attention to broader regional progress. Nigeria’s aviation sector was specifically noted for its high international safety oversight score of 91.4 percent and its efforts to stabilize operational environments through global aviation frameworks. According to Alawadhi, these honors reflect bold reforms and a commitment to global standards that are currently reshaping the industry.

The IATA Focus Africa Conference continues to serve as a high-level platform for celebrating the innovation and leadership necessary to secure the future of African flight. The story is from the EBR.
