Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has underscored the critical need for media institutions to prioritize truth-based narratives and national consensus as vital pillars for Ethiopia’s ongoing nation-building efforts. Speaking at a consultative forum held under the theme "Media Breakthrough for Narrative Building," the Prime Minister noted that while the democratization of the media landscape over the past eight years has established a strong foundation, outlets must now move away from polarization and extremism. He emphasized that the media’s core responsibility is to build a shared identity and foster national understanding by rooting their work in the truth and committing to the national interest.
In this context, the Prime Minister held up the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) as an industry model, stating that its commitment to utilizing research, data-driven studies, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) should serve as a benchmark for others. He commended EBC for its ability to present information through a lens of rigorous analysis and urged other media houses to modernize their operations by adopting similar technological advancements. According to the Prime Minister, integrating research with modern AI is essential for delivering the truth to viewers in a way that is both sophisticated and impactful, ensuring that information is grounded in evidence rather than mere speculation.
Beyond technological adoption, PM Abiy called on the media to shift their focus from "headline selling" to deep, evidence-based analysis that addresses the country's broader national agendas. He stressed that the activities of media institutions should be grounded in purpose, vision, and professional competence while remaining close to the needs of the public. By reflecting multi-national unity and promoting a governing narrative that ensures comprehensive prosperity, the media must continue to serve as balanced pathfinders and problem-solvers for the nation’s future.
