Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has issued a rallying call for immediate national focus on economic growth following the successful conclusion of the 7th General Election. Praising the public for their dedication, the Prime Minister announced that government leadership at both federal and regional levels has returned to full operational status, prioritizing the goal of achieving a 10.2% economic growth rate for the 2018 E.C. fiscal year, a target that would rank as the highest in Africa.
During the inauguration of the Entoto to Kechene Medhanealem urban renewal project, Prime Minister Abiy lauded the election as a historic milestone for Ethiopia’s democratic journey. He highlighted that the public’s determination to cast their votes deep into the night, braving rain and cold, was a profound testament to the nation's commitment to democratic governance. "With the election successfully concluded, we have returned to work immediately," the Prime Minister stated, emphasizing that there is no time to waste. With only one month and five days remaining before the fiscal year concludes on Sene 30 (July 7), the administration is accelerating its efforts to meet its development goals.
The newly inaugurated 9.6-kilometer riverside development, stretching from Entoto Kuskuam to Kechene Medhanealem, serves as a landmark component of the broader Sheger Project. Prime Minister Abiy underscored that unlike previous efforts involving international firms that failed to gain traction, this initiative was successfully delivered by local youth and artists. This urban renewal effort has dramatically reshaped the landscape, turning previously unplanned, flood-prone, and congested informal settlements into a safe, aesthetically pleasing, and pedestrian-friendly environment.
This project is being hailed as a model for urban development in Africa, balancing environmental and soil conservation with modern, accessible design. Looking to the future, the Prime Minister noted that the project is set to extend to the Peacock area within the next two to three months, with further initiatives planned to purify the river water to potable standards.
In a message to the residents of Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister extended an open invitation for citizens to utilize the scenic 10 to 15-kilometer trail for physical exercise and recreation. He encouraged the public to take advantage of the cool air and panoramic views, noting that the trail offers a unique opportunity to build physical fitness and personally experience the city's transformation.
