African Union Hails Ethiopia’s Wheat Program as a "Milestone" For the Continent

Feb 24, 2026 367

The African Union Commission has described Ethiopia's achievements in wheat production as a historic milestone and a blueprint for the rest of the African continent. Speaking on the progress, the AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati, noted that the Union has closely monitored Ethiopia’s rapid transition from a state of total dependency to becoming a wheat exporter. He expressed the Commission’s profound satisfaction with the results, characterizing the shift as a remarkable success story.

Commissioner Vilakati highlighted the broader economic challenges facing the continent, noting that Africa spends between $70 billion and $100 billion annually on food imports, with wheat being the primary expenditure. By demonstrating that domestic production can effectively replace these costly imports, Ethiopia has provided a practical roadmap for economic self-sufficiency. The Commissioner concluded by calling on other African nations to follow Ethiopia’s example to bolster food security across the region.
