Lavrov Hails Ethiopia’s Adwa Victory as ‘Milestone’ for African Independence

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, has sent a message of congratulations to Ethiopia to mark the 130th anniversary of the Battle of Adwa. In a formal address to his Ethiopian counterpart, Dr.Gedion Timotheos, Lavrov described the victory over Italian colonial forces as a milestone that initiated the struggle for independence throughout Africa.

The Russian minister said the battle was a significant event that resonated globally, representing the first victory of an African state over a colonial power. He added that the historic event confirmed the "strength of spirit" of the Ethiopian people.

The message highlighted the long-standing traditions of friendship and trust between Moscow and Addis Ababa. Lavrov noted that the two countries are working together within international organisations, including the United Nations and BRICS, to create a world order based on multipolarity and the supremacy of international law.

Lavrov also pointed to several major cooperation projects currently underway in the trade, economic, and scientific sectors. These include the construction of a Russian-designed nuclear power plant in Ethiopia and the reconstruction of the Dejazmach Balcha Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa.

The creation of the Russian-Ethiopian Joint Biological Research Centre was also cited as a flagship project of the bilateral relationship. Closing his message, the Russian Foreign Minister wished the people of Ethiopia peace and prosperity on the national anniversary.

In addition, Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Vasily Sergeevich Osmakov arrived in Addis Ababa at the invitation of the Ethiopian government to participate in the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Adwa. During the visit, he held talks with the leadership of the Ethiopian Armed Forces and Defense Ministry. Issues of mutual interest in military and military-technical cooperation were discussed.
