Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has stated that the Corridor Development Project is a massive strategic initiative with layered objectives. Beyond simply transforming the city’s aesthetic, it is designed to ensure the social and economic benefits of its residents.
In an interview with Kana TV, the Prime Minister emphasized that any development work must have a clear goal. He explained that the corridor development integrates economic, social, and environmental objectives into a single framework.
Key Highlights of the Project:
Job Creation & Skill Transfer: The Prime Minister noted that the project has created continuous employment opportunities both during and after construction. Furthermore, it serves as a significant practical learning platform for young engineers.
Bridging Theory and Practice: He highlighted how the project allows youth to gain high-level practical expertise that goes beyond university theory. Young professionals who gained experience in Addis Ababa are now executing impressive design and construction works in regional cities.
Addressing Housing Shortages: A key component of the development is housing construction, which has enabled the rapid building of thousands of homes to tackle the country’s housing deficit.
Urban Renewal: By identifying land holdings and utilizing them for their proper purpose, the initiative is replacing substandard, plastic-covered shelters with modern, high-standard buildings.
Boosting Real Estate Value: Improvements in roads, lighting, and pedestrian walkways have significantly increased the value of homes and buildings near the corridors. This has created a favorable environment for investors to commit to the sector with confidence.
Improving Traffic Flow: The Prime Minister stated that the development has significantly reduced traffic congestion by creating alternative routes and expanding existing ones.
Enhanced Mobility: By separating vehicular and pedestrian paths in Addis Ababa, the project ensures that residents can reach their destinations quickly and without hardship.
