Ethiopian Airlines Says No Flights Cancelled Despite Fuel Pressures

Mar 31, 2026 185

Ethiopian Airlines has announced that none of its flights have been cancelled due to fuel shortages, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Gulf region putting significant pressure on the global aviation sector. The carrier stated it is taking strategic measures to manage the impact of the regional instability.

The airline’s Chief Executive, Mesfin Tasew, said that while the escalating conflict initially disrupted flights to eight countries and 11 cities, the situation is now showing signs of relative improvement. Services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman have resumed, though flights to Doha, Tel Aviv, and Beirut remain temporarily suspended for safety reasons. To mitigate the decline in passenger numbers across the Middle East, the airline is expanding its reach to its other 140 destinations and has adjusted its ticket pricing.

Addressing the fuel shortage in the Gulf region, Mesfin explained that the airline is securing supplies from alternative locations in collaboration with the government. He confirmed that no flights have been cancelled as a result of fuel issues and noted that domestic services continue to operate at full capacity. The airline is also focusing on fuel consumption reduction initiatives to offset rising costs.

Separately, Ethiopian Airlines hosted a continental conference aimed at tackling the shortage of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities in Africa. Mesfin reaffirmed that the carrier is prepared to share its advanced maintenance expertise and infrastructure with other African airlines. This continental cooperation is intended to help regional carriers reduce high foreign currency expenditure on overseas maintenance and build collective capacity within the African aviation industry.
