PM Abiy Ahmed Redefines Ethiopia as a Global Renewable Energy and Food Giant

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has declared a bold paradigm shift for Ethiopia, urging the nation to move past the traditional "Water Tower" label and embrace a more functional identity as a "Tower of Renewable Energy and Food."

In a compelling address, the Prime Minister emphasized that natural resources only hold true value when they are transformed into energy and sustenance, noting that for centuries, Ethiopia’s water has carved deep valleys and eroded fertile soil without effectively serving the 60% of the population still lacking clean water and electricity. To rectify this, the government is treating energy as the "food and drink" of industry, a strategy that has already driven a 23% growth in power supply to the industrial sector this year alone.

A major pillar of this transformation is the Koysha Hydroelectric Project, which the Prime Minister announced is largely complete and scheduled to become fully operational within the next two years. This progress follows the monumental success of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was brought to fruition without foreign loans despite heavy diplomatic pressure and is now providing surplus power for both domestic growth and export. Beyond hydroelectricity, Ethiopia is aggressively diversifying its grid; the Asella Wind Power Project is set for inauguration in the coming weeks, joining the recently launched Aysha Wind Farm.

The Prime Minister also highlighted promising strides in the private sector-led Tulu Moye and Corbetti geothermal projects, alongside advancements in nuclear energy development. By integrating these diverse resources, the Prime Minister stressed that Ethiopia is committed to building a clean, globally competitive economic system designed to ensure food security and fundamentally transform the lives of its citizens.
