Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline group, has officially converted options for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners into firm orders. This move exercises commitments from a landmark agreement signed in 2023 and solidifies the airline's position as the leading 787 operator on the continent.

The addition of these ultra-modern widebody jets is a key component of Ethiopian’s "Vision 2035" growth strategy. The airline plans to deploy the new aircraft to expand its intercontinental network from its hub in Addis Ababa and to boost cargo capacity on high-demand long-haul routes across Europe, Asia, and North America.

“Converting these options into a firm order is a proud moment for us,” said Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO. “It reflects our commitment to sustainable growth and operational excellence. By expanding our fleet with these fuel-efficient, technologically advanced aircraft, we continue to enhance passenger comfort and maintain our competitive edge in the global aviation market.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is renowned for its 25% reduction in fuel use and emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft, providing the flexibility needed for profitable point-to-point travel. Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates a diverse fleet of over 170 aircraft, serving more than 145 destinations worldwide.

This latest order further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing, ensuring the Dreamliner remains the backbone of the carrier's widebody operations as it works to transform Addis Ababa into a premier global aviation hub.
