Ethiopia Speeds Up Shift to Electric, Gas-Powered Transport

Apr 24, 2026 4157

Ethiopia’s national movement to transition the transport sector to renewable energy is yielding significant results. This is evident of the nation's efforts to build a climate-resilient green economy.

To break free from fuel dependency and foreign exchange pressures, the country has taken decisive action by beginning the process of fully transitioning automobiles to electric power. Following this initiative, heavy-duty electric construction vehicles have started entering the country, pushing the industrial transition forward.

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime (PhD), informed EBC that work is underway to utilize Ethiopia’s natural gas for freight and public transport vehicles, with purchase orders already placed to implement this plan. Additionally, by supplementing freight services with rail transport, the share of rail freight has reached 17%, significantly boosting logistics efficiency.

Minister Alemu Sime noted that the transition over the past nine months to utilize natural gas and other energy alternatives is producing satisfactory results. This direction is viewed not just as a policy matter but as a means to ensure Ethiopia’s economic independence. The shift helps reduce fuel expenses to save foreign currency for other major projects, stabilizes commodity prices, and ensures the effective use of domestically generated renewable energy. Ethiopia’s progress in renewable energy adoption is now serving as a model for other African nations.
