Chinese Robotics Company Unveils Controversial Humanoid Pregnancy Robot

Aug 18, 2025

A robotics company in China, Kaiwa Technology, has ignited a global debate with the announcement of a groundbreaking project: a humanoid robot designed to carry a full-term pregnancy and give birth. The project, led by CEO Zhang Qifeng, aims to offer a new solution for surrogacy, but it has been met with both enthusiastic support and strong ethical opposition.

According to an interview with Chinese tech outlet Kuai Ke Zhi, Qifeng revealed that the revolutionary robot, which features an advanced artificial womb within its abdomen, is nearing completion. The company claims the device has already shown promising results in animal testing and could be commercially available within a year, with a projected price tag of less than $14,000 (100,000 yuan).

The concept has quickly gone viral on social media, dividing public opinion. Supporters, including many people who have struggled with infertility, see the technology as a potential miracle, offering a new path to parenthood. Others view it as a way to free women from the physical and health burdens of pregnancy. One user commented, "I tried artificial insemination three times but failed all of them. Now I have a chance to have a baby."

However, the technology has drawn sharp criticism. Opponents have labeled the idea "unnatural" and "unethical," arguing that it would deprive a fetus of the natural bond with its biological mother. Medical experts have also voiced significant skepticism, questioning the robot's ability to replicate the intricate biological processes of human gestation, such as maternal hormone secretion and crucial neurological development, which are still not fully understood. That is according to Oddity Central.
