Ethiopia is tackling global challenges with its own solutions. That was the clear message from Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the Second Africa Climate Summit, where he showcased the nation's groundbreaking initiatives in food security and clean energy. PM Abiy detailed how the Ye Lemat Tirufat (Bounty of the Basket) nutrition program and a climate-resilient wheat initiative are transforming food systems, cutting imports, and boosting rural incomes.

The prime minister also announced the upcoming inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in September, calling it a continental symbol of self-reliance and clean energy. It will provide over 5,000 MW of renewable power, expanding fair energy access for Ethiopia and East Africa. Abiy also pointed to the nation's clean cooking roadmap, designed to improve the lives of millions by freeing them from smoke-filled kitchens. He championed city-wide projects that are creating green urban spaces and phasing out fuel-based transport, all while reducing emissions and building healthier environments.

The prime minister concluded by asserting that Africa must be a "continent of solutions" and proposed an African Climate Innovation Compact—a partnership that will deliver 1,000 African-led climate solutions by 2030, funded and owned by Africans in collaboration with the world. He emphasized that Africa will not only meet its own needs but also become a leader in the global effort to combat climate change, mapping its own forests, measuring its own carbon, and pricing its own ecosystems.
