The Ministry of Education is set to distribute more than 20 million primary school books this academic year as part of its efforts to enhance the quality of education across the country.
During a recent interview, Dr. Yohannes Wegaso, the lead executive for education programs and quality improvement at the Ministry, stated that significant preparatory work has been done for the 2018 academic year. He noted that lessons learned from the previous year guided these efforts, which included the printing of textbooks and the completion of school construction and renovation projects.
Dr. Yohannes highlighted that the distribution of primary school books is a central component of this year's plan. He also mentioned that the Ministry will be implementing "outcome-based" initiatives, such as providing remedial and enrichment classes to help students build essential skills.
Additionally, preparations are underway to improve the delivery of pre-primary education. Dr. Yohannes cited the success of the school feeding program, which provided meals to over 7.6 million students last year and will continue to be strengthened this academic term.
The 2018 academic year officially began on September 15, 2025, following a period of preparation that started in early August.
