Germany's Deputy Ambassador Highlights GERD's Role in Regional Integration

Germany’s Deputy Ambassador to Ethiopia, Dr. Ferdinand von Wahle, stated that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is poised to become a significant force for regional economic integration, extending its benefits beyond Ethiopia's borders. His comments came during an interview with the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) following the dam's official inauguration on September 9, 2024, by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Dr. von Wahle praised the GERD for its immense hydroelectric power potential, emphasizing that its benefits will extend to neighboring countries and beyond, fostering stronger regional connectivity through cooperative efforts. He also expressed his pride in the project, acknowledging that it was a result of the collaboration and dedication of the Ethiopian people.

In his remarks, the ambassador also lauded Ethiopia's ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase the use of renewable energy, describing them as commendable. He noted that Germany and Ethiopia are currently collaborating on research into solar and other renewable power sources.

Furthermore, Dr. von Wahle pointed to recent economic reforms in Ethiopia as a promising sign for attracting foreign direct investment. He cited improvements to the legal framework, a large workforce, and other favorable conditions as key factors that make the country an attractive destination for investors.
