The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when a nation unites behind a shared cause, says Ambassador Dina Mufti.
In a recent interview on EBC's "Addis Qen," Ambassador Dina, a member of the House of Peoples' Representatives' Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, praised the unwavering resolve of Ethiopians and the diaspora. He stated that their collective stand on the Abay River issue during a period of immense complexity has made history.
Ambassador Dina highlighted the overwhelming sense of ownership felt by all Ethiopians, who demonstrated their commitment through bond purchases and various other contributions. He reflected on the pervasive narrative at the time that Ethiopians were incapable of such a monumental undertaking, emphasizing that citizens' unique and proud participation was crucial in bringing the project to fruition.
Dina further noted the significant diplomatic pressure exerted by downstream nations, but underscored that through the determined efforts of the Ethiopian people and their government, a diplomatic victory was secured. The GERD, he added, has succeeded in dispelling long-held misconceptions about Africa's capabilities.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Dina stressed that the successful journey of constructing the GERD should serve as a blueprint for future national development projects.
