Minister of Agriculture Adissu Arega has stated that Ethiopia's sovereignty is tied to its ability to produce its own fertilizer.

In an interview with EBC, the minister discussed a newly signed agreement for the construction of a urea fertilizer production project. He emphasized that the initiative will boost farmer productivity by ensuring a consistent, affordable, and timely supply of this critical agricultural input.

Adissu framed the project as a vital part of the government's plan to achieve food sovereignty and secure national prosperity. He noted that domestic fertilizer production will accelerate the transformation of the agricultural sector.

The minister underscored the leadership's commitment to completing the project on schedule, referencing the successful execution of other major national projects. He also highlighted the significant financial benefits, pointing out that Ethiopia currently spends $1.3 billion annually on imported fertilizer. Producing it at home, he explained, will lead to substantial foreign currency savings.

Furthermore, Adissu stated that the project will eliminate the logistical challenges and dependencies that come with relying on foreign imports. He concluded by saying that the government plans to use the new urea plant as a starting point to produce other types of fertilizers domestically, reinforcing the nation's commitment to improving agricultural output and ensuring a more prosperous future.
