In a social media message posted today, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh highlighted the historic and ongoing importance of education in Ethiopia, framing it as a core national value passed down through generations.

"Our people have known the value of education for millennia," he wrote, citing the long tradition of Madrassa and Abinet religious schools as a testament to this enduring commitment.

Temesgen underscored the widespread public desire for an educated populace, stating, "Today, the desire of all our people is to send their children to school and to raise an educated generation."

He also expressed strong criticism for those who oppose educational advancement. "It's painful to see some people, who are themselves free from knowledge, striving to make a generation free from knowledge as well," he wrote. The Deputy Prime Minister concluded with a sharp rhetorical question, condemning the practice of hindering learning while living in a modern society: "What ignorance is greater than opposing education while living in a civilized country?"
