Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Mayor Adanech Abiebie today officially inaugurated a major new corridor development project in Addis Ababa, a key step in the city's effort to become more livable and inclusive.
The project, which is the fifth of eight to be completed in the second phase of urban development, is an 8-kilometer stretch that runs from Meskel Square to Megenagna and ends at South Gate. According to the Mayor, it links with corridor projects completed in the first phase, creating a more cohesive urban network.
The new corridor boasts significant public amenities, including sports fields, recreation areas, and playgrounds for children. It also features a main road with a width of 51 to 60 meters, complemented by 16 kilometers of concrete pedestrian walkways. Modern infrastructure was also installed, including modern electric lines, roadside smart poles, and convenient lanes for both pedestrians and cyclists.
Mayor Adanech acknowledged that the project was challenging due to the existing railway line and other buildings that were constructed too close to the road. However, she emphasized that the successful completion of the corridor is a testament to what can be achieved through diligent work and perseverance.
Speaking at the inauguration, the mayor stressed that the city's main priority is to build a city that is comfortable for all its residents, including adults, children, youth, and people with disabilities. She stated that the development shows Addis Ababa is a city that creates public spaces, provides shared utility areas, and invests in its people.
Mayor Adanech concluded by expressing her deep gratitude to the community for their partnership in the project, stating that if citizens work together, Ethiopia's prosperity can be realized quickly.
