Ethiopian Tech Talent Wins Big at BRICS Skills Competition

Three young Ethiopians triumphed at the BRICS Skills Competition in Guangzhou, China, securing a gold, silver, and bronze medal, showcasing Ethiopia’s burgeoning technical expertise on the world stage.

The competition, featuring over 300 participants from BRICS member countries, saw Zelalem Endalew clinch gold, leading the charge for Ethiopia with his innovative project.

Zelalem Endalew's winning project focused on developing a digital agricultural control and monitoring system.

This system promises to revolutionize agricultural practices by providing real-time data and automated controls, addressing critical challenges facing Ethiopian farmers.

Brook Kedir (PhD), Director General of the Federal Technical and Vocational Institute, lauded the team's achievement, stating it elevated Ethiopia's reputation through groundbreaking ingenuity.

Ebenezer Tekeste secured the silver medal with his invention of a Manual Plastic Injection moulding machine.

Meanwhile, Nebiha Nesru earned the bronze medal for her innovative AI-powered Nurse Calling System.

Nebiha’s work demonstrates the application of artificial intelligence to improve healthcare efficiency and patient care.

According to Brook, these accomplishments are a direct result of rigorous skills competitions held in Ethiopia.

He noted that the intense training and practical experience gained through these competitions empowered the young innovators to excel on the international stage. "The creative ideas that the young people presented and won were a result of their extensive experience and expertise gained from the competition," he explained.

Brook also emphasized the practical value of the winning projects, asserting that they have been tested and proven to be effective solutions for real-world problems in various regions of Ethiopia.

He expressed optimism about the potential for these innovations to be scaled up and put into production, further driving economic growth and development.

He affirmed the Federal Technical and Vocational Institute's support for future competitions and fostering the next generation of Ethiopian innovators.
