The Ethiopian National Theatre is stepping into the digital age. In a significant modernization effort, the 69-year-old cultural institution recently announced it is adopting a fully digital operational system, highlighted by a new online ticketing platform. The move is designed to modernize the theater's services and make it more accessible to the public.

The shift to online ticket sales, developed in partnership with Red Cloud ICT Solutions, marks a significant milestone. According to Director General Bareke Tadesse, this new system will make attending performances more convenient and accessible for audiences throughout the country. Bemnet Demissie, General Manager of Red Cloud ICT Solutions, highlighted how the new platform will not only streamline customer service but also expand the theatre's reach.

Alongside the digitalization, the theatre has adjusted its ticket prices from 80 birr to 200 birr. This change, approved in consultation with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is framed as a strategic investment to enhance the quality of performances and services. Bareke Tadesse clarified that the primary goal isn't to generate revenue but to improve the audience's experience and uphold the theatre's core mission of preserving Ethiopian cultural heritage.

Looking to the future, the National Theatre also unveiled a plan to launch a nationwide training program for young artists. This initiative will offer training in acting, composition, and production, with a special focus on developing talented performers who will have the chance to work directly with the theatre.

These changes, which aim to revitalize the historic institution, will be showcased in a series of events planned for the start of the new Ethiopian year on September 5, 2025. By integrating digital technology, investing in programming, and nurturing new talent, the Ethiopian National Theatre is positioning itself as a dynamic arts hub for a new generation while honoring its legacy, reported Capital.
